Decide what type of lamp you want to use for your light. Halogen lamps give a clear white light, but not quite long and can create a lot of heat. Tungsten lamps give a warmer, yellower light and last a little longer, while compact fluorescents (LEDs) and light emitting diodes (LEDs) last far longer than both tungsten or halogen and produce very little excess heat. The type of lamp you are using will determine the type of lamp fitting you need and it will affect the size of your pendant light. CFL bulbs may require a standard size bulb mount while candelabra size sockets are available for smaller tungsten light, which is a series of halogen connectors.

Select a shade based on your lamp and socket size. You can choose to design and create your own from any non-combustible material, or choose from a variety of replacement shades available on the device. Glass is a popular material for pendant shades, in either food or colored varieties. Determine the thickness of your pendant light ceiling plate by measuring the actual object you want to use.
